Banana Chocolate Hazelnut Pie

Cole and I were invited to dinner by one of my pilots and his wife and we, of course, said we would provide the dessert. For the week leading up to the dinner, I had planned to make a banana Nutella gallette, but when I went to make the pie the morning of, I wasn't feeling inspired by that idea anymore, so I called an audible.

Instead I threw all caution to the wind and came up with an actual pie, using the same flavors I was going to use for the gallette. Holy cow it turned out stellar! The bananas were so creamy and flavorful while the chocolate added richness and the toasted hazelnuts added the crunch it needed. Sometimes the simple desserts that only have a handful of ingredients turn out the best!

Servings: 8-12

Prep Time: 10 min

Total Time: 1 hr

INGREDIENTS:

  • Double pie crusts (you can use store bought or make your own)

  • 5-6 bananas, sliced

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips

  • 1 cup toasted hazelnuts

  • 1/4 cup (half stick) butter

  • 1 egg + splash of milk for the egg wash

  • Sugar for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and spray a pie dish with cooking spray.

  2. Prepare the bottom pie crust by rolling the dough out to about 1/4 inch and laying it in the pie dish.

  3. In a large bowl, toss sliced bananas with the brown sugar and cinnamon. Add the bananas to the prepared pie dish on top of the bottom crust.

  4. Spread the chocolate chips over the bananas.

  5. Crush the toasted hazelnuts (I just put them in a gallon sized Ziploc bag and hit it on the counter a couple times with the bottom of a frying pan). Sprinkle the crushed hazelnuts on top of the bananas and chocolate chips.

  6. Slice the butter into squares and arrange them evenly over the bananas, chocolate, and hazelnuts.

  7. Add the top crust, crimp the edges, and make some slits in the top crust so the steam can escape from the pie while it bakes.

  8. Make an egg wash by whisking an egg and a splash of milk together. Brush the egg wash all over the top crust. Finish by sprinkling a little sugar (about a tablespoon) all over the top crust.

  9. Bake the pie for about 50 minutes or until the top crust is golden brown.

  10. Cool for at least 10 minutes before serving! Tastes great hot or cold!
