Nutella Snowflake

Talk about a pretty pastry! This features Nutella (one of my personal favorites) and is amped up with a little orange zest. It really is fairly simple to make - the hardest part of this entire recipe is twisting the puff pastry into the snowflake shape. There is only 5 ingredients in this recipe, and it bakes up fairly quickly.

This is a great addition to breakfast, can opt as a snack during your next wine night, and obviously is a stellar dessert. Best served warm!

Servings: 6-8

Prep Time: 15 min

Total Time: 1 hr 10 min

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 sheets puff pastry (you can use store bought or make your own), thawed

  • 1/2 cup Nutella, at room temperature

  • Zest of a large orange

  • 1 egg, beaten

  • 2 Tbsp powdered sugar for dusting

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 376 degrees F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

  2. Cut each sheet of puff pastry into 9 inch circles. I flipped a pie dish over and cut the circles off of that template!

  3. Place the first sheet of puff pastry on the parchment lined baking sheet. Using an offset spatula, spread the Nutella over the top. Get as close to the edges as you can. Sprinkle the orange zest over the top of the Nutella.

  4. Place the second round of puff pastry over the top. Gently press the edges to seal the puff pastry together.

  5. Place a small glass in the center of the circle. and lightly press to make an indentation. Using a pizza cutter or a small sharp knife, cut the circle into fourths - leaving about an inch in the middle of the pastry uncut with each slice. Continue cutting the fourths into eights and then again into sixteenths. When you're done cutting, you should have sixteen total sections.

  6. Grab two sections next to each other and twist them away from each other three times. Press the two ends together to make a point. Repeat until you have eight points total.

  7. Brush the "snowflake" with the beaten egg (I like to add a splash of milk in the egg mix so the puff pastry doesn't get too dark).

  8. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.

  9. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly for about 10 minutes.

  10. Dust with powdered sugar!
