The Best Sticky Rolls of Your Life

Updated: May 31, 2020

Back when I was a young Girl Scout, lets say 12 years old, my mom helped me make these sticky rolls for a baking contest and it's safe to say they were pretty damn successful! I'm pretty sure we won one of the top accolades and one of the local firefighters bought the entire plate to take home. I made these this past week for my pilots and I think it's safe to say they enjoyed these sticky rolls about as much as that firefighter did!

In theory, all you have to do is dump all the ingredients together in a casserole dish since you can use frozen bake-and-serve dinner rolls. Go-figure the frozen rolls are the one thing I forget to pick up at the grocery store. Below I included my recipe for homemade rolls at the very bottom, but if you actually read the grocery lists you make (unlike myself), you can save a lot of time and use frozen ones instead!

Servings: 16 (depending how big your rolls are)

Prep Time: 1 hr 15min + overnight

Total Time: 1 hr 45 min + overnight

INGREDIENTS:

  • 18 frozen bake-and-serve dinner rolls

  • 1 cup chopped pecans

  • 1/2 cup melted butter

  • 1 Tbsp cinnamon

  • 1 - 6 oz package of butterscotch pudding mix

  • 1 cup brown sugar

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Spread the chopped pecans over the bottom of an ungreased 9x13 inch casserole dish. Lay rolls on top of the nuts and pour the melted butter on top of the rolls.

  2. Sprinkle rolls with cinnamon, butterscotch pudding, and brown sugar.

  3. If you are making this recipe with frozen rolls, cover and let sit on the counter overnight. If you made homemade rolls, cover and place in the refrigerator overnight.

  4. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.

  5. Once done, remove from the oven and immediately flip the casserole dish upside down on a serving platter or cookie sheet. Serve hot!

Homemade Rolls

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1/2 cup warm water

  • 2 tsp sugar

  • 1 Tbsp yeast

  • 1 tsp kosher salt

  • 4 Tbsp melted butter

  • 4 cups flour

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a mixing bowl (preferable in a stand mixer), combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Slightly stir with a spoon until mostly dissolved. Let sit for 10 minutes.

  2. Add salt, melted butter, and 2 cups of flour.

  3. Once all ingredients are combines, start to add the rest of the flour 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well in between additions. The dough should be slightly sticky to the touch.

  4. Using the dough hook attachment, allow the mixer to knead the dough on medium speed for 2 minutes.

  5. Allow the dough to rise, covered, in a bowl for about an hour in a warm place.

  6. After the dough has risen, shape the dough into 18 balls. Add the dough balls to the recipe above as required!

  7. If you are not making the sticky roll recipe, place the dough balls on a greased baking sheet about 1 inch apart and allow to rise another 30 minutes.

  8. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.

  9. Immediately brush the top of the rolls with melted butter and set aside to cool slightly before serving.
